Why your business is invisible on ChatGPT (and how to fix it)
More of your customers are skipping Google entirely. Instead of scrolling through links, they ask ChatGPT, Gemini, or Perplexity a simple question: “Who's the best plumber near me?” The AI answers with a short list of names. If your business isn't on it, that customer never even sees you — they call the name the AI gave them.
This isn't a fringe behavior anymore. The share of consumers using AI to find local businesses jumped from about 6% in 2025 to 45% in 2026 — and a recent index of 350,000+ business locations found that only 1.2% of them ever get recommended by AI. The other 98.8% are invisible at the exact moment a customer is choosing who to call.
How AI actually decides
Here's the key thing most owners miss: for a local question, the AI doesn't answer from memory. It runs a live web search and names the businesses it sees trusted across several independent places at once. One good listing isn't enough — the signal has to repeat. If your presence is thin or inconsistent, the AI simply isn't confident enough to name you, so it picks someone it is confident about.
Why AI skips you
The most common reasons a business gets left out — roughly in order of impact:
- Your Google Business Profile is missing, unclaimed, or thin (the #1 local signal).
- You have fewer recent reviews than the competitors who get named — recency matters more than total, and replying to reviews counts too.
- Your name, address, and phone aren't consistent everywhere AI looks, so it doubts which listing is really you.
- You're absent from the “best [your town]” roundup articles and directories AI cross-references (Yelp, Angi, BBB).
- There's little user-generated proof — Reddit threads, forums, YouTube — that AI pulls from.
- Your website isn't clearly readable or structured (missing the behind-the-scenes “schema” code that tells AI what you do and where).
What actually fixes it
The good news: these are all fixable, and most of your competitors haven't figured it out yet. The highest-leverage moves are almost always the same — claim and complete your Google Business Profile, build a steady stream of recent reviews (and reply to them), keep your name/address/phone identical across the web, get listed consistently on the directories and “best of” lists AI trusts, and make sure your website clearly states your services, service area, and answers common questions.
