AI is the new Yellow Pages — what local businesses need to know
There's always been one place customers go to find a local business. For decades it was the Yellow Pages. Then it was Google. Today, a fast-growing share of people simply ask an AI assistant — and trust the answer it gives. In just one year, the share of consumers using AI to find local businesses grew roughly 7.5× (from about 6% to 45%), and most who use it say they trust the businesses the AI recommends.
The difference this time
The Yellow Pages listed everyone. Google gave you a page of options to compare. AI does something new: it names just a few businesses and stops. There's no page two. Being “somewhere in the results” no longer counts — you're either the answer, or you're invisible.
Why moving first matters
Because the rules are new, most local businesses haven't adjusted yet. That's an opening. The owners who get recommended by AI now will build a lead that compounds — the longer you're the name it gives, the more it sticks. The ones who wait will be playing catch-up against competitors the AI already trusts.
You don't need to be technical to get ahead of this. Start by finding out whether AI recommends you today — it takes about a minute and costs nothing.
